French President Emmanuel Macron called for deeper UK-France cooperation to defend the international order during his historic state visit to Britain—the first by a European leader since Brexit.

Welcomed by King Charles III with full royal pageantry at Windsor Castle, Macron addressed the British Parliament on Tuesday (July 8), urging unity between the two countries on key global challenges including support for Ukraine, trade independence, and multilateralism.

Macron emphasized the importance of a “coalition of the willing” to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine and warned of overdependence on the U.S. and China in trade and supply chains.

The visit also symbolizes a thaw in post-Brexit tensions, highlighting renewed diplomatic and economic ties between France and the UK. It comes 16 years after the late Queen Elizabeth hosted then-President Nicolas Sarkozy.
