Japan seeks deeper ties with Taiwan as Tsai Ing-wen begins second term
Japan is eager to deepen ties with Taiwan as its president, Tsai Ing-wen, begins her second term in office, top government spokesman Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Wednesday.

Taiwan is an “important partner and precious friend” who shares basic values with Japan, Suga noted, adding that they enjoy close economic ties and increased people-to-people exchanges.
“We’d like to congratulate President Tsai Ing-wen on the start of her second term,” Suga said at a news conference.
“Based on our stance to maintain nongovernmental, working-level ties, Japan will continue to deepen cooperation and exchanges with Taiwan,” he added.

In its annual diplomatic bluebook released Tuesday, Japan called Taiwan an “extremely important partner” — a boost from last year’s description that referred to Taipei as a “crucial partner.” Highlighting the importance of the two countries’ ties, this year’s bluebook also devoted a full page to Taiwan, twice as much space as the 2019 edition.
Northeast Asia sees more consensus
An article published in Financial Times Chinese on July 29 said that US, Japan and South Korea are acting increasingly independently, while a trend of joint action is being frequently observed among China, Russia and North Korea. Thus, a conclusion is made in the article – balance of power in Northeast Asia is being reorganized.

Japan-South Korea disputes have not impacted the essence of the US-Japan-South Korea alliance. Japan-South Korea trade conflicts might somewhat influence the three countries’ cooperation, but their military alliance is still stable. Yet the US-Japan-South Korea alliance needs to be reshaped and transformed under new geopolitical and international conditions.
(…)
As long as the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is not realized, South Korea will remain dependent on the US in security and geopolitics. The General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), a military intelligence-sharing pact between Japan and South Korea, is supposed to be renewed on August 24. This will be an important juncture. If any change occurs to the agreement, there might be a crack in the US-Japan-South Korea military alliance, even though it will not completely collapse.
In world first, Japan’s Hayabusa2 probe collects samples from distant asteroid after second successful touchdown

Hayabusa2 touched down on its targeted area measuring 7 meters in width, located 20 meters from the artificial crater’s center. The probe extended a tube to the surface and fired a small metallic projectile from it, successfully capturing the subsurface debris as it floated up, the agency said.
The brief landing Thursday was the second time Hayabusa2 has touched down on the asteroid, which is about 300 million kilometers from Earth.
The complex multiyear mission has also involved sending rovers and robots down to the surface.
